Our Lady of the Annunciation
The Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation and the Martyrs of Japan is situated on the edge of the village of St Martin.
The church was completed in February 1863 and consecrated by Bishop Thomas Grant of Southwark in June of that year.
The reference to the martyrs of Japan was because these martyrs - six Franciscans, three Jesuits and seventeen laymen - had been canonised by Pope Pius lX in 1862 and their feast day on Feb 3rd coincided with the completion of the Church in the village of St Martin.
A new porch, built in the style of the original church, was added in 2008, giving a large area for welcoming, for notice boards, books and newspapers.
On Sunday 23 June 2013, Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth offered a Mass of Thanksgiving in the church to mark the 150th anniversary of its opening.
The Berni Community Centre, situated in La Longue Rue, St Martin, just behind the church, has recently undergone major refurbishment. This includes paintwork, a new kitchen, ceiling, lighting and floor. The Centre is currently used by, among others, Scouts, the Jersey Caledonian Pipe Band, the Jersey Association of Childcarers, art classes with Gabi Radiguez and Toddlersense - adventure for toddlers up to the age of three.
If you would like to hire the Berni Cente for a children's party or other gathering, please call 853953 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings or email firstname.lastname@example.org. A bouncy castle can be arranged inside and there is lots of parking space and a safe garden area for use when the weather is fine.
The church can be found at La Grande Route de St Martin, St Martin, JE3 6JR.
