The Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation and the Martyrs of Japan was completed in February 1863 and opened and blessed by Bishop Thomas Grant of Southwark in June of that year.
The reference to the martyrs of Japan was because these martyrs - six Franciscans, three Jesuits and seventeen laymen - had been canonised by Pope Pius lX in 1862 and their feast day on Feb 3rd coincided with the completion of the Church in the village of St. Martin.
A new porch, built in the style of the original church was added in 2008, giving a large area for welcoming, and for notice boards, books and newspapers.
To book a party or gathering in the Berni Centre, adjacent to the church, call 01534 853953 on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings. There is lots of parking space and a safe garde area for use when the feather is fine.
