A chapel was opened in Gorey in 1903, named Our Lady of the Assumption, but it was very small and soon moved to a slightly larger plot in 1908 in Gorey village.
By 1953, the small chapel was not sufficient for the growing population. A new church, which had previously been a non conformist chapel and then a cinema was opened in 1953. It was blessed by Bishop King of Portsmouth in September 1954 and named Our Lady of the Assumption.
